Enhancing the Amharic Teaching and Learning Experience

A Comprehensive Project by Our Language School

Teaching and learning Amharic has always been a challenge due to the scarcity of modern, relevant educational materials. The most significant Amharic textbook was published in the 1960s by the Foreign Service Institute in the USA. Since then, efforts to create comprehensive learning resources have been relatively sparse, with some noteworthy textbooks emerging during Ethiopia’s era of communism. These textbooks, produced in East Germany and Russia, were heavily focused on grammar and lacked the dynamic and interactive qualities that modern language learners now expect.

Recognizing this gap, our language school has embarked on an ambitious project to revolutionize the Amharic teaching and learning experience. We are developing a series of Amharic textbooks titled “Amarïňňa Qäs Bäqäs” (Amharic Step by Step), designed to cater to both beginner and intermediate learners. This project spans levels A1, A2, and B1, with each level further divided into sublevels such as A1.1, A1.2, A2.1, A2.2, B1.1, and B1.2, totaling 150 hours of classes required to complete each level.

Our textbooks are not just about language acquisition; they are a cultural journey. We offer versions in both the Amharic script (fidel) and phonetic/roman symbols, ensuring accessibility for learners who are not yet familiar with the script. Each textbook is structured into four modules, each consisting of three chapters. At the end of each module, we have included a dedicated magazine section filled with articles, interactive activities, and cultural insights to deepen the learners’ connection with Ethiopian culture.

This comprehensive approach is designed to create a dynamic, interactive, and cooperative classroom environment, making the learning process both effective and enjoyable. However, the scope of this project presents enormous challenges in terms of time and financial resources.

To bring this vision to life, we appreciate any support from the community. You can contribute by attending one of our courses, purchasing our books, or making a direct contribution through our crowdfunding platform. Every bit of support helps us move closer to our goal of providing top-quality Amharic learning resources that are long overdue and setting up a language center with all the necessary facilities to meet modern top-class standards.

Thank you for your support!
