On the 2nd of August 2024, the Atmosphere Cultural Center in Addis Ababa was abuzz with excitement as language enthusiasts and members of the community gathered to celebrate the launch of a groundbreaking series of Amharic textbooks. The event marked the official release of the first part of the “Amharic Qäs Bäqäs” series, specifically the A1.1 Textbook and Workbook, along with the Amharic Reader Guide book.
The evening began with doors opening at 18:00, allowing guests to mingle and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of the venue. By 19:00, the event was in full swing, kicking off with a lively 30-minute discussion session. Attendees shared their experiences with the Amharic language, recounting both humorous and challenging moments encountered while learning. These stories included amusing misunderstandings caused by false cognates and the intricacies of Amharic pronunciation, highlighting the unique aspects of the language and its learning curve.
Following the discussion, Amanuel Fesehatsion Habte, the author of the “Amharic Qäs Bäqäs” series, took the stage for a presentation. He provided an insightful overview of the newly launched textbooks, emphasizing their significance as a much-needed update to Amharic language learning materials. Amanuel shared the journey of developing these comprehensive resources, which are designed to cater to both beginner and intermediate learners. The textbooks are divided into levels A1, A2, and B1, with each level further broken down into sublevels, making them adaptable to different learning paces and styles.
One of the unique features of these textbooks is the dual-script approach, offering versions in both the Amharic script (fidel) and phonetic/roman symbols. This makes the material accessible to learners who may not yet be familiar with the Amharic script, broadening the reach of the language. The textbooks are also structured into four modules, each containing three chapters, and include a magazine section at the end of each module. This section is filled with articles, interactive activities, and cultural insights, enriching the learning experience and deepening students’ connection with Ethiopian culture.
The presentation was met with enthusiasm and appreciation from the audience. Many attendees expressed their excitement about the innovative approach of the “Amharic Qäs Bäqäs” series, recognizing it as a significant advancement in Amharic language education.
The event concluded with a relaxed gathering where guests enjoyed drinks and continued to discuss the new materials. The positive reception of the books at the launch event underscores the importance of contemporary, engaging, and culturally immersive educational resources in language learning.
